Legal Requirement for RPS Training
Radiation employers have a duty to provide appropriate training for all employees working with ionising radiation under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017.
Reg 18 requires employers to appoint one or more RadiationProtection Supervisors (RPSs) to supervise the work according to the Local Rules. The purpose of the training is to ensure the RPS is made properly aware of the specific radiation hazard, has a good appreciation of the relative exposure risk, understands the relevant legislative controls, and is familiar with the basic principles of radiation protection in the workplace.
For guidance on the role of the RPS and training requirements please refer to
HSE Information Sheet Number 6 (Radiation Protection Supervisors)
Radman Associates host a range of two-day residential and one-day on-site RPS courses. Our RPA tutors explain the role of the RPS, including all required duties, the current legislation, and how to prepare for HSE compliance inspections.
We aim to provide a practical understanding of radiation protection principles without labouring the physics of the subject. Throughout the course attention is paid to the cornerstone of occupational radiation safety practice, namely that all exposures should be reduced to levels which are ‘as low as reasonably practicable’.

“I really enjoyed the course; it was very informative and challenging. It wasn’t totally relevant to my field of work (medical) and I think that maybe this could have been more clearly highlighted. In saying this I found the course well worth the attendance and would recommend it to others”
“Openness and group working proved a good point for all involved. Instructors were first class, very helpful and professional. Hotel and food were very good. Would thoroughly recommend to colleagues”
“I thought the course was really good – particularly the number of delegates involved. Everybody integrated really well together and the tutors were very approachable. I felt I learned a lot from this course”
“A very interesting and enjoyable course. The course notes will be of great use to me in the future”
“I would like to thank the team at Radman for an excellent service.
A professional approach to our initial assessment by a knowledgeable assessor, a training course that helped to make interesting what can be a brain numbing amount of information and a generally good customer service”
