radiation protection advice and training

Radman FAQ

Do you provide advice on non-ionising radiations?

No, we specialise in the role of RPA, as defined by the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999, and the wide range of applications for such radiation in research and industry.

What do RPA services contracts include?

Annual, all-inclusive contracts including site visits (typically 1 for sealed sources/ x-rays; 2 for unsealed sources) with audit reports and availability for advice as and when throughout the year.

For research applications we tend to include the annual calibration of contamination monitors which can be performed on site.

What area do you provide RPA cover for?

We cover the whole of Britain from Dundee to Brighton, Aberystwyth to Lowestoft (yes, we do see a lot of the motorways!)

What cover can you provide for emergency response out of hours?

We recognise that communications are paramount to the RPA/client relationship, and this extends beyond normal office hours. Out of hours, therefore, our main incoming phone line is transferred to a partner's home.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Naturally, as an established, professional firm we carry the necessary PI cover to the value of £1M.

What level of training is required for an RPS?

The requirement for RPS training comes from reg 14 (information, instruction and training). The level of training given should be appropriate to the nature and complexity of the radiation work and the needs of the individual.

Most formal RPS courses are 2 to 4 days duration. By categorising training needs as to 'sealed sources & X-rays' and 'laboratory radiochemicals' our RPS course focus on the specific problems affecting each, and we're therefore able to concentrate the training in to a 2 day residential course.

What are the requirements for RPS refresher training?

Again, this should be dictated by the extent and complexity of the radiation work being supervised. Generally, however, refresher training should be considered every 3 to 5 years.
