Radioactive Sealed Source
Leakage Testing
Radioactive
sealed sources are required to be leakage tested at least every two
years to demonstrate the integrity of their encapsulation [IRR99 Reg.
27(3)]. A record of the test should be kept for at least that period,
or until a subsequent test.
Radman Associates assist with statutory wipe tests
and certify satisfactory results after analysis of the swab.
If loose contaminating material is detected, recommendations
are made as to the suitability of the source for continued use.
Test certificates based on international standards,
confirm the satisfactory state of your radioactive sealed source.

Frequency of testing
If the source is employed in equipment which is located
in a hostile environment (e.g. at risk from chemical attack, heat or
physical damage) the frequency of testing should be increased accordingly
to detect any breakdown in the source containment.
The necessity for a test is to be decided by the
employer based on the likelihood of leakage and the type of source;
tests may not be appropriate on sources which have dimensions no greater
than 5mm, such as microspheres.
